CHAPTER FIFTEEN

SERAFINA

I push my way through the automatic glass doors, my heart somewhere in the vicinity of my throat and my breathing nothing but shallow gasps. Fear wars with anger inside of me as I run straight towards the circular nurse’s station in the center of the spacious, high-ceiling room.

“Kian Brummer,” I wheeze as I struggle to replenish my air supply.

It feels futile, though, as if each breath I take is immediately countered by an onslaught of razor blades being forced down my throat. They slice, stab, and cut at everything they come into contact with.

The nurse behind the counter glances up from the computer screen, and her eyes immediately shadow with concern.

“Family?” she questions with a cocked eyebrow.

“Um…” I don’t know how to respond to that, and fortunately, I’m saved from saying anything by Xander materializing from around the corner.

He’s wildly disheveled, his dark hair sticking out in every direction as if he’s run his hand through it one too many times. His shirt is untucked, and the few buttons he managed to do are in the wrong holes, causing the dress shirt to dangle precariously to one side. It’s almost as if he were in the process of changing his clothes when he got the call.

The same call I got less than an hour ago.

“It’s… It’s Kian and Tristan.” Devyn’s voice was a rough scrape on the other end of the line. “There’s been an accident—”

“Are they okay?” I demanded immediately, throwing my legs over the side of the bed and already walking towards my closet. I threw a sweatshirt over the cami I chose to wear for bed tonight and tugged on a pair of sweatpants. “Where are they?”

I wasn’t allowed to drive—not with my seizures—but perhaps Maddox or Caleb could give me a ride. Or I could walk…

“Kian’s in the hospital.” Devyn’s voice scratched at something in my soul, something I couldn’t articulate. “And Tristan…”

He heaved out a heavy, almost strangled-sounding breath.

“What about Tristan?”

“Just get to the hospital, Sera. I’ll explain everything once you’re here.”

One Uber ride later, and I’m here, dancing on pins and needles as I await the verdict with bated breath.

Is Tristan dead? Is that why Devyn didn’t want to talk to me about it over the phone? Oh god… The mere thought squeezes my heart in a giant fist. I actually feel light-headed by the sheer enormity of my feelings. They barrage me from every direction—crashing over my skin like the rippling caress of a tidal wave and then submerging me completely.

No. Tristan can’t be dead. I refuse to believe it.

I fucking refuse.

“Where are they?” I growl before Xander can get a word in.

I skirt around the nurse’s station—ignoring the stern woman’s penetrating glare—and stop when I’m directly in front of Xander.

I don’t dare break his gaze. Somehow, I find an innate sense of comfort and peace in the molten depths of his arresting green eyes. Those verdant depths soothe the restless, pacing beast inside of me. I find I can breathe easier just by staring up at him.
